Infrastructure investment

Transport is a major contributor to economic outcomes. The transport sector represents 4.4 percent of GDP, and almost half of Australia’s major infrastructure construction is undertaken within the transport sector.

Investment in and delivery of publicly owned transport infrastructure is the responsibility of all three levels of government. The Australian Government has committed over $75 billion for the next 10 years to transport infrastructure across Australia. This investment is assisting in building more liveable cities, enabling better-connected regional communities, driving key productivity improvements and creating safer roads.

NICS will continue to be updated as specific project information and commitments are announced by the Australian, state and territory governments.

Northern Territory Government

Jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Northern Territory Government, this $150m project will provide public hospital services for the current and future needs of the people of Palmerston and the Greater Darwin region. Palmerston Hospital will be designed to complement the services provided by Royal Darwin Hospital. With links to Darwin, Katherine and Gove hospitals through the Top End Local Hospital Network, the Palmerston Hospital will service the top end of the Northern Territory. Palmerston is currently undergoing a significant period of infrastructure growth and development. With a projected population of 44,000 by 2025, extensive planning and 'behind the scenes' work has been undertaken to ensure the hospital can meet the needs of our growing population. A 45 hectare 'green field' site in Palmerston was identified as the best location for the development, specially chosen for its location, ease of access and size - as this will ensure the hospital has the ability to expand, as required.
