The Western Highway is the principal road link between the Victoria and South Australia. It is the key road corridor into Western Victoria and supports agriculture, manufacturing, regional tourism and a range of manufacturing and services activities. The project will enhance 110 kilometres of the Western Highway from Ballarat to Stawell, reducing travel times, enhancing safety and improving the suitability the Western Highway for road freight transportation.

The Duplication Project consists of several stages:

Section 1 - Ballarat to Beaufort including Section 1a (Ballarat to Burrumbeet) and Section 1b (Burrumbeet to Beaufort) - (Practical Completion achieved in 2015);
Section 2a - Beaufort to Buangor - (Practical Completion achieved in early-2016);
Section 2ab - Buangor Bypass - (Practical Completion achieved in mid-2016) ;
Section 2b - Buangor to Ararat - (In Procurement);
Section 3 - Ararat to Stawell - (In Planning)
